The University of Hyderabad, a premier institution of post graduate teaching and research in the country, was established by an Act of Parliament (Act No. 39 of 1974) on 2nd October, 1974 as a Central University, Wholly financed by the University Grants Commission.

The University opted for a rigorous evaluation by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) of the University Grants Commission. The apex Council of NAAC awarded the top grade of A ***** to the University (on a five-point scale A* to A*****).

The University has also been rated by the NISSAT (National Information System for Science and Technology) of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research (DSIR), Government of India, as the only University under the ‘High Output – High Impact’ category among the top 50 institutions in India with publications in citation - index journals. The School of Life Sciences consists of four department providing degrees on interdisciplinary subjects. The departments are as follows:

Department of Biochemistry: 

Courses offered: M.Sc. Biochemistry, M.Tech Medical Biotechnology, Ph.D Biochemistry. 

Admission Process: Through entrance exam

M.Sc Biochemistry entrance examination question paper consists of 100 objective type questions of B.Sc standard. The questions are drawn from Chemistry (40%), Biology (30%), Physics and Mathematics (30%). 

M.Tech – Medical Biotechnology entrance examination question paper consists of 75 objective type questions (75 marks) in Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Immunology, Genetics, Medicinal Chemistry, Microbiology etc. Based on the order of merit in the written examination, the candidates will be called for an interview (25 marks).
Ph.D in Biochemistry admission, will be based on an entrance examination and interview conducted by the Department. Candidates who are qualified in the NET examination (under Junior Research Fellowship category only) conducted by CSIR/UGC or ICMR are entitled for a fellowship. The written examination is optional for NET (CSIR/UGC) qualified JRFs. However, they are required to appear for the interview. The question paper of the entrance examination will carry 75 objective type questions (75 marks) of M.Sc standard drawn from the areas of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. Based on the order of merit in the written examination, the candidates will be called for an interview (25 marks).

Department of Plant Sciences:
Courses offered:  M.Sc. Plant Biology and Biotechnology, M.Sc. Molecular Microbiology, Ph.D. Plant Sciences.
Admission Process: Through entrance exam. 
M.Sc. Plant Biology and Biotechnology entrance examination question paper consists of 100 objective type questions of B.Sc., standard and all are to be answered. Broadly the question paper will consist of 40 questions in Botany, 20 questions each in Biochemistry/Chemistry, Microbiology and Genetics.Negative marking is applicable for wrong answers.
M.Sc. Molecular Microbiology entrance examination question paper consists of 100 objective type questions of B.Sc., standard and all are to be answered. Broadly the question paper will consist of 25 questions each in Botany, Zoology, Biochemistry/Chemistry, and Genetics/Microbiology. Negative marking is applicable for wrong answers.
Ph.D. Plant Sciences admission will be based on an entrance examination and an interview conducted by the Department. The question paper will consist of 75 objective type questions of M.Sc. standard and all are to be answered. Broadly, the questions will be from the areas of Plant Biology, General Biology, Microbiology, Molecular Biology, Genetics and Biochemistry. Negative marking is applicable for wrong answers.
Candidates qualified in the written test for Ph.D. admission will be called for an interview. 25 marks will be awarded for the interview performance.
The ICMR, DBT, ICAR (SRF), CSIR-UGC JRF candidates can directly appear for interview without taking the entrance examination as per the guidelines of the University.

Department of Animal Sciences:
Courses offered: M.Sc. Animal Biotechnology, PhD Amimal Sciences
Admission Process: Through entrance exam
Admission to M.Sc. program will be given on the basis of performance in entrance examination. The question paper for entrance examination for M.Sc. admission will consist of 100 questions of B.Sc. standard. The candidate has to answer all 100 questions. Broadly the paper consists of questions in Zoology, Botany, Chemistry, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Biotechnology and Genetics. Detailed specific instructions will be given in the answer book.
Admissions into Ph.D. program will be given on the basis of performance of the candidate in the writ­ten test followed by an oral test. Candidates who have qualified for CSIR-UGC JRF/ICMR-JRF/DBT-JRF are exempted from written test. The entrance examination will consist of 75 objective questions of M.Sc. standard with emphasis in animal biotechnology, cancer biology, immunology, molecular biology, biochemistry, physiology, parasitology, neurobiology, cell biology and the candidate has to answer all questions. Students are advised to see detailed instructions in the answer book.

M.Sc. Biotechnology Selection is based on Common Entrance Examination in Biotechnology (CEEB) conducted by the Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi as part of the Biotechnology program supported by the Department of Biotechnology, Govt of India. (www.jnu.ac.in/Admission/M.Sc Biotech07.htm)

M.Tech. Bioinformatics admission is based GATE score in the subject areas Biotechnology, Chemistry, Mathmatics, Physics, Agricultural engineering, Electronic and communication engineering, Computer science and Information technology and Chemical engineering. The students are evaluated for their skills in mathematics, statistics, computer programming and biotechnology in an interview. Based on the performance fo the candidates the admissions will be made.
M.Sc./Ph.D. Biotechnology admission is based on an entrance examination and interview conducted by the Department. The question paper will carry 75 objective type questions (75 marks) of B.Sc standard drawn from the areas of Biotechnology and Bioinformatics. Based on the order of merit in the written examination, the candidates will be called for an interview (25 marks). Selection will be based on the overall performance of candidates in written test and interview.
Ph.D. Biotechnology admission is based on an entrance examination and interview conducted by the Department. Candidates who are qualified in the NET examination (under Junior Research Fellowship category only) conducted by the CSIR/UGC or ICMR or DBT are exempted from the entrance examination.
